Ed Thomason, Artistic Director of Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre, has come to me with a great opportunity. Last year, the festival started a second series called "Stage 2" which is located in the revamped/redecorated Somer's Hall on St.F.X. Campus. Stage 2 is designed to bring in acts of all shapes, sizes and colors from professional actors, to local musicians, to circus performers, to drum circles. Last year they had performers such as "the award-winning Halifax troupe, Zuppa Circus, the dance group, El Viento Flamenco, as well as wonderful individual artists such as Scott Macmillan, Holly Carr, Mary-Colin Chisholm, Christian Murray and Dave Carmichael" as well as a night entitled "That Thing You Do" where local acts of all kinds volunteered their talents. Stage 2 prides itself in having no boundaries - everything is welcome.
Ed has decided to ask me to help him extend "That Thing You Do" to a weekly performance of musicians of all kinds. He has asked me to gather a group of musicians who were willing to perform for one night, a couple nights, or all seven nights. (The Festival runs from mid-july until the end of August). I am looking for individual perfomers, groups, or individuals who would want to play with other musicians who are interested. Everyone's talent is welcome. Each night would present either different musicians, or a different combination of musicians as well as a different genre or theme for each night whether acoustic, electric, jazz, blues, rock, funk, country, folk, traditional, jam bands, music from different cultures, music from different eras, singer/songwriters, instrumental - whatever it is you like to do, this is where you can do it. He is open to everything! He suggested a night with a "kitchen party" theme, or maybe a "song writers circle", or even just a bunch of musicians jamming. Anything!
The "policy" of Stage 2 is that it is $5 at the door for everyone, no matter what is going on inside (professional or amatuer acts). Ed stresses that he is not interested in making money off of Stage 2 ;It is an extension of F.A.S.T. run by donations and grants and therefore, he does not have any money in his budget to pay the acts, HOWEVER, he is willing to compensate for travelling costs (ie. gas money) for acts who are travelling to Antigonish when possible, AND if all goes well, he is willing to split the cover charge that people are paying amoung people playing each night. The theatre takes nothing; the more people that come out, the more money you make.
I am trying to collect a tenative list of people who are interested in performing. So even if you don't know if you can do it, but are interested, please let me know.
Also, please feel free to pass this email on to anyone else you know that might be interested.
